Price for serving the nation: $5k

Guess my title sums up wat's going on. Heard abt the case of the talented musician who had been residing in Notting Hill in Britain, who's coming back to spore, and supposedly to be hailed as a national hero. however, he had escaped from serving the nation 30 years back. and the punishment he's going to receive for that: a $5k fine.
wat a little price to pay. some may say it's too little a fine for him.

my friend had commented on this issue as well.
Sin Chang

some may feel the years spent is wasted. in some aspects, it may hold true, but i learnt much as well during those years.
as how my my friend had placed in his blog, here's a song

Training to be soldier
Fight for our land
Once in a life
Two years of our time
Have you ever wonder
Why must we serve?
Coz we love our land
And we want it to be free
To be free...

i do not regret serving the nation. this is my homeland, if i do not serve it, who will?
in times of war, i will pick up arms and defend my homeland. will he do the same? by picking up arms or his instruments?
or will he bail out like he did?

if i am singapore, i would rather have a common citizen who's willing to serve and protect me, over an outstanding citizen, who chooses not to serve me.

to me...
the price for serving the nation: priceless.
